The second, morganatic marriage actually took place already 13/25 November 1853, but was kept secret until the death of Emperor Nikolai I Pavlovich. The marriage was then approved by the new Emperor Aleksandr II Nikolaevich and the Dowager Empress Aleksandra Fedorovna. |
