Biography Notes

Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck, since 1825 of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Assumed the Danish throne upon the death of King Frederik VII after the extinction of the most senior line of the House Oldenburg. Reign 1863-1906. Often called "the Grandfather of Europe or "the Father-in-Law of Europe".. With Christian IX, the official name of the Danish Royal Family changed from "Schleswigg-Holstein-Oldenburg" to "Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg" or, even more correctly, to "Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg".
